A BOOK OF TO DO'S

As we launch into 2013 and pondering what exciting time this year will bring (as 2012 will be pretty hard to beat) I have been thinking of ways of keeping myself on track as a go about my day to day this & that.

For those who know me well, well those that have to deal with me every day will know how I am rather good at getting side tracked away from the matter at hand. Usually those small insignificant jobs that have to be done on a daily basis but necessary to stop your world falling into a chaotic black hole....I am sure my lovely readers that there are a fair few of you guilty of those crimes.

So I have purchased myself an actual write in page to a whole day diary and a very plain and dull brown notebook. It is dull and plain because otherwise I won't write in it but will just look at it lovingly and move it from shelf to pile and back again....in the chaos.

Every morning or maybe evening I am not sure exactly when I shall write a to do list 3 essential tasks that have to be done and 3 things I should like to do... to try indeed to keep me on track.

I know that I will never be super organised and that the unconventional way I go about things will generally mean that things are ship shape and proper maybe once a month, for an hour or two, long enough to take a quick snap and post it somewhere or other on the internet to lure you into the false sense that I live in a perfectly tidy and quite lovely home....I also like to kid myself that I live in a lovely organised, tidy and clean home.

My book of to do's is really about me getting more things done in the time I have without completely trashing everything...I have high hopes but is also something that I would like to look back on and ponder the things I achieved throughout the year as often things get lost under the piles. So this means writing the lists in my very best hand writing rather than the untidy scrawl that matches the pile of wet towels in the bathroom.

So there you have it....just wondering how long I will keep it up before it becomes boring & tiresome and falls into an abyss...

  1. When I was getting snowed under with everything a few years back a friend told me that she never ironed. It was a revelation :) My mum irons everything and it had never occurred to me that I didn't have to iron. It has revolutionised my life! Some things still need ironing occasionally but if you fold and dry carefully then you eliminate the need to iron which is always good in my book! It gives me back at least 2 hours a week that can be (in theory anyway) spent making!

  2. What a great idea, Rachelle! I'm going to get a new notebook right now ... I think I'll do the 3 essential things very quickly, then reward myself with the nice things!I set my kitchen timer and see how much I can achieve in an hour, it's amazing what you get done under pressure ...

Have to go, I need to paint a chair!

  3. Like the idea of it being in a book :)

I write a daily to-do list and love ticking it off.

Todays list - make soup, make bread, shop for milk, laundry and play in snow with teenagers :) Oh and drink hot chocolate with cream/marshmallows - got to have some fun!!

  4. I love the actual ticking-off with a list, and I also find if I give myself an hour for housework I go like a bullet, otherwise things seem to take longer as I get sidetracked.
There's nothing quite as inspiring as a new notebook and freshly sharpened pencil.

  5. Do you ever add things onto your list after you have done them? I do! Pointless, I know....but it makes me feel like I've been very productive!

  8. Oh I so empathise! I have just spent every spare moment emptying my music dept at school these last 2 weeks to move to a new location, being side tracked and distracted so many times! As I am the world's worst procrastinator, this has meant it has taken 3 times longer that It should, and I am still not ready! My office is still uncharted territory!

  9. I think this is a great idea. I became a "list person" a couple of years ago and I find its great. And yes I do write a big list of "to do's" but I also include a couple of things I have already done so I can cross them off but for me, this works great (mentally). Also its amazing how you can end the day or the week and feel like you have achieved nothing and then when you look at your list, youve actually done quite alot. Happy list making :-) Julie

  11. Great idea, there is something about having it written down on paper instead of digitally which keeps your 'to do's' in your minds eye so to speak, mind you, it's never lasted longer that a week with me, list keeps getting longer and I stress out with all the to do's to do :) x
